Fluid Mechanical Dissection - Carburetor

Overview:

For MAE 3230 (Fluid Mechanics), we were tasked to examine a fluid-mechanical system in depth to understand the physical underpinnings of the engineering of the device. My peers and I took apart a carburetor from a weed whacker and analyzed it closely in a 5-minute video. My contribution was analyzing the venturi in the carburetor.

Key Takeaways & Skills Developed:

  • A carburetor is one of the simplest and cheapest ways to mix two streams of fluid in a controlled manner.

  • It was absolutely astonishing to learn (and then prove mathematically), how the fluid flow and air intake were exactly proportional to a change in pressure drop to ensure a stoichiometric chemistry in the overall fluid.

  • A crucial skill I developed was physically dissecting a machine and bringing all the equations and ideas learned in class to life by analyzing the system independently with a group of my peers. Not only did I learn to physically apply equations, but also state and justify any and all assumptions made that led me to those equations.
