High-Altitude Balloon Launch*

Overview:

The High Altitude Balloon Launch for the Alpha CubeSat project is a critical component designed to simulate a space-like environment for photo documentation, testing and validation purposes. This launch aims to provide an accurate representation of the CubeSat and its functionalities, specifically focusing on the light sail deployment in near-vacuum conditions. The mechanical design of this balloon launch was iteratively developed to improve upon previous attempts, with a strong emphasis on capturing high-quality visual data, specifically targeting the elimination of visual obstructions and achieving better quality in video and photo documentation of the light sail deployment, while ensuring the CubeSat's performance.

2. Payload Design

  • The payload must ensure CubeSat visibility, void of any obstructions. 

  • The weather balloon will be tethered to a styrofoam box containing the necessary electronic equipment, which will then be tethered to the frame-CubeSat payload.

  • A clear frame structure will securely hold the CubeSat and multiple cameras, each positioned to provide a different view.

  • The lightsail will be tethered to the CubeSat to provide ample video footage of its deployment.

3. Payload Design Assembly Analysis

  • Order and test cameras

  • CAD Assembly

  • Analyze structural integrity and balance

  • Refine design, order/3D print subsequent parts

4. Light-Sail Tether

  • Redesign CubeSat light-sail compartment such that light-sail may be tethered while stowed

  • Light-sail compartment sealed for temperature protection, and has holes for fishing line to loop through 

  • Test light-sail tethering methods 

  • Test and record deployment

5. Payload Assembly 

  • Assemble CubeSat, frame and electronic box. 

  • Test deployment, cameras, etc.

  • Refine Alpha CubeSat flight code to adapt to Balloon Launch 

  • Test electrical components: GPS, temperature sensor
